August 11,2012  WADE AND GATTON NURSERIES AND GARDEN TOUR

Think you know Hostas? Come over to Bellville, Ohio for an APLDOH friendly outing at this nursery owned by Van and Shirely Wade, who are world famous for their specialty with Hostas. They grow over TWO AND HALF THOUSAND DIFFERENT VARIETIES OF HOSTA! WHAT? and over ONE THOUSAND FIVE HUNDRED DIFFERENT VARIETIES OF DAYLILY. NO WAY! Let’s see if there are special daylilies that bloom in August. Those two things would make this a worthy trip, but in addition their retail garden center covers over 5 acres, and they have extensive collections of other perennials, shrubs, and trees.

In addition, as designers, we rate a personal tour of the display gardens by Van Wade himself, who calls the Hosta the friendship plant, for it is so easily given to others. He has been known to give out a free one to new visitors to the gardens. I heard that the gardens may be home to the world’s largest Hosta. Like stopping to see that big ball of string – it would be something to see. Some hostaphiles probably have it on their bucket list.

PICKERS PARADISE IN GEAUGA COUNTY

On March 24, APLDOH had a design outing at the buisnesses of  two artists  in Geauga County that featured

art and architectural salvage.  The first stop was at Cleveland Art, the shop of Jason Wein, a glass blower and metal artist. He specializes in creating unique art objects from almost anything. The amount of salvaged items at his place was a boat load.

Then we went to the home of artist and architectural salave expert, Rudi Benedejcic. We enjoyed a thorough tour of his home which was a former church. Outside he is creating a unique garden in the former church yard. The amount of interesting salvaged items in his home was astounding, as was the creativity displayed by how they were used. He specialized in finding the unique historical items and can be a great resource if you are looking for a special item for a project.

Carol Palansky did a great job of organizing this event, which was capped with a networking lunch at Punderson Lodge.

CUTTING EDGE CONCRETE

The APLDOH event in Richfield in February was well attended and well worth the while. Greg Matta gave a very interesting tour of his must-be-see decorative concrete showroom, and led a sprited discussion on just what concrete can do with today’s technology. Afterwards many of the attendees continued the conversation at the Goumet Cafe of Richfield.

CENTS 2012 – Kevin O’brien presented on creative design

‘GERMINATION AND PRODUCT OF CREATIVE THINKING’

Kevin O’brien     APLD Professional Member LIFESYLES LANDSCAPING INC.

KEVIN EXPANDED UPON ON HIS RECENT PRESENTATION ON CREATIVITY IN DESIGN FROM THE APLD 2011 CLEVELAND           CONFERENCE – KEVIN’S TALK WAS CREATIVE, INSIGHTFUL, AND WELL RECEIVED – HE CALLED FOR THE DESIGNER TO ALWAYS ASK WHAT, HOW, AND WHY –  TO COME UP WITH ALTERNATIVE OR UNUSUAL IDEAS FOR A PROJECT. DO YOU ALWAYS TRY SOMETHING NEW ON EVERY PROJECT? HE, LIKE FLETCHER STEELE, IS NEVER SATISFIED, AND ALWAYS TRYING TO IMPROVE. HE LISTENS TO THE CLIENT, GOES WITH HIS FIRST GUT REACTION TO A SITE, AND IS DRIVEN TO COME UP WITH COMPELLING SOLUTIONS. A STRONG IDEA WAS TO MAKE THE IMPLEMENTED BIG IDEA SO INTEGRAL, THAT CHANGES WON’T ERASE THE HEART OF THE DESIGN. THE FUN THEN STARTED WHEN KEVIN SHOWED MANY EXAMPLES FROM SITE PROJECTS AND SHOW GARDENS THAT DROVE HOME HIS POINTS. VERY CREATIVE APPLICATIONS OF A COUNTLESS VARIETY OF SITUATIONS. IMPRESSIVE.

HE ALSO RECOMMENDS THIS WEB SITE FOR IDEAS – TED.COM

THANKS KEVIN!
