The workshop will take place during the second week of a one-month residential garden installation on a 1-acre site in Bath, Ohio. This project is an exceptional opportunity to develop a wide range of design skills. We have chosen the most dynamic part of the project for this workshop.  The site has a number of natural features, including an 8 foot deep gully leading into a 60 foot wide ephemeral lowland pond, and large mature trees and north and south facing slopes, each producing its own sun and shade zones. We estimate using 100 tons of sandstone from an abandoned quarry and 1,000s of plants, with an appropriate sampling of each in the workshop. Workshop participants will be involved in the full spectrum of design and construction tasks, including creating several key scenic vignettes.

  • developing design possibilities for 8 different site character zones
  • locating and placing large and small rocks to create dynamic geologic effects
  • choosing and placing plants to heighten natural habitats implied by site characteristicsWHEN: August 16-22, 2015 WHERE: Bath, Ohio, just north of Akron and 20 miles south of Cleveland.
